What Should I Do if I Have Clogged Drains?
Boiling Water
If you think you have a clog, whether it is in the toilet or sink, you can use boiling water. It is completely free, and easy. Simply put a pot of water on the stove and bring it to boiling.
While waiting for it to boil, attempt to clear out the sink or toilet that is clogged. You want to avoid it from overflowing when you pour the water in. Take the boiling water and pour it into the clogged area. You may need to do this multiple times before it loosens and becomes unclogged.
Salt and Boiling Water
If the boiling water alone does not work, then you can try to do the same thing but with salt added. Pour about 1/2 cup of table salt down the drain, followed by boiling water. Let the salt sit, and follow with all of the hot water to clear the mixture.
Vinegar and Baking Soda
You want to be careful with this one. Try to remove as much of the water in the sink or toilet, and then pour about a half cup of baking soda followed by the same amount of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar. You will see it bubbling, so wait around 15 minutes for it to subside. Then run hot water, or pour hot water to attempt to unclog the area.
Plunger
The first thing you may reach for in the event of a clog is your plunger. Although typically you may only think this is used for the toilet, you can also use it in your sink. If you have a double sink, then you will need to seal off the second side first with a wet cloth or a stopper. Then create a tight seal around the plunger, and fill the side of the sink that needs to be plunged. Place the plunger over the drain and plunge several times. Once you hear the suction clear the clog, you can remove the plunger and flush the drain with warm water.
Plumber's Snake
Also known as an auger, this tool resembles a long snake and can help to clear stubborn clogs stuck in your drain. Insert the snake into the pipe until you feel some resistance, then pull up to break up the clog. If you cannot break up the clog with your snake then you will need a plumber to come in with their professional auger.
Avoid Clogs Before They Happen
The best way to remove clogs is to avoid them altogether. Try to avoid putting greasy items down your sinks and toilets, and always run water down any drain after use. If you have a Clogged Drain that you just can’t fix, contact North Texas Custom Plumbing today.
